Vast sea views, with the coast between Palermo and Cefalù, beautiful small towns, impenetrable oak and beech groves and high, inaccessible mountain tops. Places of significant scientific interest pursue each other along this itinerary, offering grand representations of nature, at times completely wild and uncontaminated. An incredible sight to meet one’s eye.

EXCURSION TO THE GIANT HOLLY OF PIANO POMO.

Following the “sentiero natura” (nature path) which departs from Piano Sempria Castelbuono, and after about 1,3km, it’s possible to admire the population of holly trees at Piano Pomo, consisting of 317 superb individuals with a maximum age estimated at about 350 years old, positioned at 1,400 metres above sea level, and overlapping the towns of Petralia Sottana and Castelbuono. The most notable is made up of an area of stumps of ten big saplings, and of a specimen of ‘policaule’ which reaches, at 15 metres, its highest. The nature of the trunks, which, grown together, give rise to completely natural sculptures, open to liberal interpretation. The form of the crowns have a tendency to be cone-shaped, are very dense and let little light pass through.

TIBERIUS GORGES

Another excursion not to miss takes us to the River Pollina and to the suggestive Tiberius’ Gorges. To get there from Castelbuono, go down towards Cefalù, and about 1 km after the Fiumara bridge, follow the asphalted road to the right, park the car and continue on foot to the river ( about 4 km ). On the right are the Gorges.
