Castelbuono is cradled in a valley on the mountainside of the “Colle Milocca”, right in the heart of the Park of the Madonie, between the luxurious scenery of woods, with their oak trees, chestnut trees, cherry trees and ash trees, and of the mountains of Pollina, San Mauro, Geraci Siculo, Gibilmanna, Isnello, which seem to leap out suddenly: harmonious fusion of greenery, of rocks and of snow, iridescent with the advancement of the seasons and of the hours of the day, depending on the sun’s reflexes and the chiaroscuro of the shadows.

Important Events
The most important festival in Castelbuono is on 27th July and is in honour of its Patron Saint, Saint Anna. It culminates in a crowded procession which accompanies her reliquary. The celebration lasts three days with a variety of folkloristic events, religious celebrations, illuminations etc. Part of the programme includes an international footrace competition, which takes place along the streets of the historic centre. Its first running in 1912 makes it the oldest in Italy and in Europe. Particularly noteworthy are the celebrations for the Carnival, with carts and costumes, for Saint John (24th June), with the traditional broad beans and potatoes boiled in “quarare” / ( enormous cooking pots ) on open fires in the streets and offered to all passers-by. Cultural tourism is intense here with an annual calendar filled with important appointments: local gastronomy gatherings; summer shows; craft work expositions; antiques and collectors items; exhibitions dedicated to modern and contemporary art; to the art culture of the Madonie. Moreover, there are choral music exhibitions and theatre, jazz and concerts, as well as a series of medieval stage plays.
